What A Difference A Year Makes

What A Difference A Year Makes

Last week I mentioned I’d begin a new series. It’s been almost a year since my husband died. When I look back, the changes seem astronomical. I contracted to have the main floor of our fifty-year-old home redone, cleaned the garage and put a new floor in there, and replaced the patio. That’s just a few of the changes. I think this week I’ll show you some of the main floor redo. Anytime you decide to tear something out, it…

New Service and New Series

New Service and New Series

We’ve got a new gadget for this blog. I recently got a request from a reader who has trouble with their eyesight. They suggested a free service that I could add to my blog to read the content aloud. They suggested two free sights.  https://websitevoice.com and  https://www.text2speech.org . I chose to try the first one. You can also use this service to read this blog to you while you do other stuff. To engage it, click the black button…

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Okay. March is finally here. Winter appears to be loosening its grip (hopefully). It’s time to start spring cleaning. I took a hard look at the garage floor the other day. Because one of our cars spends a lot of time on unpaved roads, I had great globs of mud caked on the new garage floor. After spending too much time shoveling several pounds of the stuff with the snow shovel, I swept, then took a hose and did…

Sharpen Your Observation Skills

Sharpen Your Observation Skills

At a conference last weekend I learned of Norman Rockwell paintings that appeared on Saturday Evening Post April Fools editions. There are 57 mistakes in this painting. Finding these mistakes can help you with your observation skills. Can you find them? To find a more clear copy of this painting go here. How many did you find? Below is a list of the mistakes.   Two Kinds of Molding on cupboard top North American Pileated Woodpecker head is on body…

Great Reminder

Great Reminder

Last Sunday at Colonial Presbyterian Church,  Overland Park Campus, the congregation enjoyed a play by the youth choirs about Daniel in the Lion’s Den. There were many good messages throughout, but one in particular stood out to me. There is no god greater than the One who shut the lion’s mouths and who joined Daniel’s three friends in the firey furnace and even kept them from smelling of smoke when they came out unharmed. He hasn’t changed. He’s still the…

Winter 2019

Winter 2019

City living with its many conveniences causes us to forget the harsh conditions which lie beyond the city limits. Conditions that farmers face every day when caring for their animals during this seemingly-endless winter. My son, Josh, needed a little assistance this week and asked me to accompany him to feed and water the horses at our farm. Snow hid the metal plate covering the turn-on valve for the water supply in order to fill the stock tank. We had…

What Goes Around . . .

What Goes Around . . .

In off times I write on my memoir. Below is an excerpt from one of the pages. The rest of the story sits at the end of this blog. We moved back to Fort Scott, Kansas from Ottawa, Kansas after WW II when I was four. Our house sat on a corner not far from downtown. Across the street to the west lived an old lady. Because there was a housing shortage at the time, her son, his wife, and…

Choices

Choices

We have a choice. We can do what is right in our own eyes, or we can do what is right in God’s eyes. Therein lies a world of difference. In our society today some folks have a skewed view of right–like the politicians calling for abortion–even abortion up to the day of birth; some even to after the baby is born. On the opposite end of that spectrum is God’s word, which stands forever (Isaiah 40:8) saying, “Thou shalt…

Allergy Solutions

Allergy Solutions

When our son, Joshua, was small, we were puzzled by several bizarre behaviors. For no reason, he’d let loose with high-pitched screams. Once taught, he couldn’t retain the information. His handwriting was illegible. Before kindergarten the school district gave him an IQ test. That test registered him with a 53. All these factors landed him in special ed classes. Through a series of events, and a consult with a Dr. Doris Rapp, M.D., we began to suspect he was…

Boundaries

Boundaries

I never cease to be amazed at how you can read a passage in the Bible you’ve read a hundred times before and yet, this time something new pops out at you. With all the talk of borders these days I was surprised God had something to say about them. In Exodus 23:25-31 He says that if we will serve (worship) Him and make Him our Lord and God He will do the following: He will bless our bread and…
