As I grow older, I’m more and more aware that words have changed meaning. At one point at a writing critique group I wrote that a character, “slipped into her thongs and dashed out the door.” After a long silence, one member suggested I might want to change the word “thongs” to “sandals” since thongs now meant skimpy underwear, not shoes. Another day, I noticed the silver needed polishing. After several trips to Wal-Mart I finally remembered that item. (Hmmm….

Strawberry Preserves Time

Strawberry Preserves Time

Late May/early June signals time to make strawberry preserves at my house. Aldi had strawberries on sale this week and I made several runs on my local store and made off 30 pints. Here is a picture of the result of some of them.   If you’ve never made them, it’s very simple. Wash and stem several pints of strawberries. Cut them into quarters. Place them in a large pot and add an equal amount of sugar. Heat the pot…

Psalm 91

Psalm 91

Psalm 91 is known as the Soldier’s Psalm. There are many accounts online attesting to the power of this psalm. Here is one account you might have not have heard from just after WW II found at https://www.magnoliabannernews.com/news/2018/nov/02/psalm-91-gods-shield-protection/#:~:text=I%20will%20say%20of%20the,be%20thy%20shield%20and%20buckler.. “After the war, Secretary of War Henry L. Retiring?

Retiring?

I spoke with a young man the other day. The subject of age came up. When he found out I was old enough to retire over sixteen years ago he asked why I didn’t. “Because I like my job as a chaplain. Why quit? The Bible never talks about people retiring.” Abraham was eighty-six when he fathered his first child. Moses started on his forty-year trek leading the Israelites through the desert when he was eighty. Noah started building the…

Strong Towers

Strong Towers

When I visited Ireland I saw strong, stone towers somewhat similar to the one above. Proverbs 18:10 says, The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe. When Vikings came to wipe out a settlement, the citizens ran into these towers. Today, we have the name of Jesus as our strong tower. Are you trusting Him for His protection?   My books are available at https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B007F5H0H4

A New/Old Way to Plant Corn

A New/Old Way to Plant Corn

This is my second year trying to grow a garden. My late husband was the gardener in the family. Now, it’s up to me. Last year my attempts fell woefully short so I bought gardening books and even pulled out a couple my dad used about forty years ago. Armed with heirloom seeds from Planter’s, a fascinating seed store in downtown Kansas City, I set out to try again. I chose heirloom seeds rather than hybrid so I can…

Garden Planting

Garden Planting

With the snow we had last week our garden-planting has gotten a late start. Josh and I tried planting carrots and radishes but the seeds are so small you can’t locate them to know how deep to cover them with dirt. I took some Elmer’s water soluable glue and attached them to toilet paper. Each seed is three inches from the other so they won’t have to be thinned later. The radishes are between the carrots. That way, radishes spring…

Obedience to Jesus

Obedience to Jesus

Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Jesus, how can we do these things? We can’t do this on our own. My child, invite My Spirit to indwell you for You can’t do this alone. Put your trust in Me. Step out bravely and you’ll see things you thought were only history. Zechariah 4:6b ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of…

The Chosen

https://youtu.be/q6sHNLmYbAM?list=PLgn4viMGbbmDEw-R3MoYRYuRlmsgxd2A3   There is an excellent new video out for free on YouTube. You can also get the app on your phone or tablet and cast it to your TV. There are eight episodes in the first season with eight seasons planned. If you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it. The first episode I found a little hard to follow because they were introducing the main characters, but by the second  episode it was much easier to follow….
