How to Pray Scripture

How to Pray Scripture

On the National Day of Prayer in the first part of May, as I drove I heard someone on the radio praying for the nation from II Chronicles 7:14 which says, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

As I drove, I quoted the scripture with the speaker and was surprised when they left off half way through the scripture dealing with our wicked ways and God’s response if we will do our part.

In order to enjoy God’s blessings, we have to DO what He requires, before we see Him move on our behalf. How can we fulfill His requirements if the person speaking doesn’t tell us what God says to do?

It’s a little like someone giving us a treasure map and says, “X marks the spot.” When we look at it, half the map is torn away. We need to hear and do the whole truth in order to receive the treasure.

In my quiet time this morning, I was drawn to Ezra 9:6-15 and Daniel 9:4-19. Both are powerful prayers because they give a powerful pattern of how to pray for God’s intervention. Click the blue words to be taken to those scriptures.

What do you think? Have you seen God intervene as a result of prayer?

Bold as Lions

Bold as Lions

Proverbs 28:1

The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion.

To the one who is at odds with God, everyone is an enemy. They have no protector. No one to turn to. They must be on constant watch. In order to defend themselves from who knows what, they must have a weapon always at hand.

Everyone they meet is suspect. Is this person going to harm them in some way? Cheat them? Turn them into the police? Is the next drug deal going to be with an undercover agent? Will they contract a wasting disease from their next trick?

When we are right with God, we have the creator of the universe going before us and at our back (Isaiah 52:12). God Himself holds our right hand (Psalm 73:23). He hides us in the shadow of His wings and we are constantly in the center of His vision (Psalm17:8). He provides all my needs in Christ (Philippians 4:19).

Father God, thank You for Your provision
to cause me to be in right standing with You.
Thank You for the peace and stability You bring
which far exceeds any earthly treasure.
I bow before You in humble adoration.

Keep Your Eye on the Goal

Keep Your Eye on the Goal

Eyes on the prize

II Thessalonians 2:16
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

The Apostle Paul wrote these words to the church at Thessalonica. They were under great persecution. Paul wanted to encourage them.

Today’s scripture is some of his last words written to the Thessalonians. He wanted to remind them, that though they were going through intense spiritual battles, they needed to keep their eye on the goal—the coming comfort and solace of their sure eternal salvation at the hand of their Lord Jesus and God their Father.

Paul also prayed for their hearts, their thoughts, passions, and wills, to be strengthened in every good work and in their words.

We would do well to pray this scripture for those God lays on our hearts for it is a powerful and weighty benediction—one anyone would be pleased to receive.

Lord Jesus, may we ever keep our eye on the goal
no matter the circumstances.
May You author and encourage our works and words
to produce an increase of Your Lordship
until the whole world knows You and Your mighty love.

God’s Solution

God’s Solution

Psalm 37:1
Do not fret because of evildoers, be not envious toward wrongdoers.

We can waste a lot of time getting our tails in a knot from the things we see and hear going on around us. In these days we have multiple opportunities every day to be incensed at what we see and hear both at home and abroad.

Often we must remind ourselves Who is in charge and that He has a plan. Sometimes we jump into a situation that is of no real consequence and doesn’t serve God’s purpose, even though it’s a just cause. In reality, it only serves to distract us from God’s goals and purpose for our life.

We need to remind ourselves often that God sees it all and is perfectly capable of rectifying the situation. Also, that He is the ultimate judge of the whole earth. He didn’t appoint us His earthly magistrates.

Lord Jesus, may I seek You
at every bend in the road
and each step of the way.
Please keep me on track
and out of the ditches
so I might be available
and listening for Your call
whenever You choose to speak.

True Joy

True Joy

I Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

In God’s kindness and goodwill toward us who were stuck in sin and afflicted with mortality, He took pity on us. He made it possible for us to be conformed to His will and way.

Now we can enjoy real, efficient life forever with Him when we receive the gift of His own Son sacrificed for our sakes. Jesus proved this fact when He raised from His grave and showed us that those who follow Him will arise also.

This good news fills us with joy and confidence in His most generous gift for the here and now and forever in eternity.

What a wonderful God we serve! Let us share this good news with at least one other person today.

Lord God, cause at least one person to cross my path today
with whom I can share this wonderful news.
Open the doors of opportunity
and then shove me through it.

God’s Promise

God’s Promise

Bright Future

Isaiah 60:15
Whereas you have been forsaken and hated with no one passing through, I will make you an everlasting pride, a joy from generation to generation.

Have you ever felt God has abandoned you? That He has forgotten your name? That you no longer matter to Him?

If so, take heart. This scripture is for you. Even from the first word, “whereas” this is meant to encourage you. “Whereas” carries a meaning of “being burdened, oppressed, in subjection or conquered; under the hand of.”

“You have been,” means “continue, be finished, be gone.” “Forsaken” is “to let alone, neglect, deserted.” Ever felt like that?

Good news! God promises to set in place a perpetual exaltation and rejoicing for you and your generations—for eternity. What a future to look forward to!

Oh Lord God! Thank You for Your promises
which are always in effect, and never go out of date.
They are the only constant truth to be had.
I rejoice in Your kindness and encouragement
which never fails and is new every morning.

Jesus is the Same

Jesus is the Same

beconing Jesus

Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, yes and forever.

The same Jesus who was the Word with God in the beginning (John 1:1), who kept Noah’s boat from sinking Genesis (chapters 7-9), who parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to escape the Egyptians on dry land (Exodus chapter 14), is the same Jesus who came to earth in a body like ours. He healed the sick. He raised the dead. He cast out demons and cured lepers.

He bled real blood when Roman soldiers cut His back to ribbons after He was falsely accused. He allowed unjust men to nail Him to a cross where He died. He rose again from the grave and now sits at God’s right hand.

This same One is listening for your cry. He desires to come to Your aid. He desires a relationship with You one-on-one. What is your response to this person who knows you best and loves you most?

Lord Jesus, I rejoice You never change;
You are trustworthy and loving.
I come before Your throne seeking a forever relationship with You.
Forgive me for the times I fall short of Your divine purpose and plan.
Plant my feet solidly in You to be Your useful tool here on earth.

What it Means to Abide

What it Means to Abide

Homesteading

I John 4:16
And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him.

God’s love is not an on-again, off-again relationship with believers who put their trust in Jesus. He wants us to abide in His love—even when we don’t feel like it.

The word “abide” means “to be held, kept continually, remain, continue to be present.”

In earlier days in the United States, a person could stake a claim on 160 acres of land. If they stayed on that land for five years, improved it by planting crops and living on it, they received the deed to the land. It was theirs.

There was a condition, however. During those years, they had to personally abide there. They could never leave their claim for longer than six months. Otherwise, they lost their claim to the land.

That’s the kind of abiding in love this passage talks about. Don’t waver in your love for Jesus if you want a relationship with Him. Settle down. Stake a claim. Let Him do the same in your heart and life.

Lord Jesus, I pray to continue in Your love
even when everything in me wants to run the other way
or give up and quit.
Supply me with Your love for others at all times.
Come, Lord Jesus. Stake Your claim in my heart.

The Future

The Future

New Jerusalem

Isaiah 51:11
So the ransomed of the Lord will return, and come with joyful shouting to Zion; and everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Do you think of the Bible as an old history book? It might surprise you to know parts of the Bible haven’t happened yet. This is one of those future passages. When Jesus returns in the sky, just like He left (Acts 1:9-11), He will reign on earth for a thousand years from Jerusalem (Zion in this passage) (Revelation 20:6).

Those of us who have asked Jesus’ sacrifice to count for the punishment for our sins, will come to Jerusalem with joyful shouting. We are the redeemed spoken of here. Jesus’ blood has purchased us from Satan’s slave market. Eternal joy will be ours. King Jesus will drive away all sorrow, groaning, grief, and physical distress that will never return. What a glorious day that will be!

Lord Jesus, I long for the day of Your appearing,
for on that day, we will see You face to face.
Evil will be put to flight; our sorrows will be done away.
Illness will be gone. Our hearts will rejoice in Your presence.
You will dry our tears and replace them with joyful shouts.
Oh, come, Lord Jesus! Come quickly!

Judgment Day

Judgment Day

beconing Jesus

I Timothy 2:4
(God) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

God desires all humans to be preserved from danger, injury, and peril. He wants to keep us safe and sound, and restore us to health. That’s what saving means. He wants everyone to enjoy Him and His is protective care. He wants to deliver us from His final judgment.

Some people doubt there is a real judgment day. Jesus talked about that day in Matthew chapter 24. Revelation 6:16 says “and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;’”

Not everyone is going to accept His offer of life forever with Him in heaven. Some believe God is dead. Others believe He has no interest in our every-day lives. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

If you’re reading this you’re still breathing, it’s not too late. I urge you to bow before Almighty God and ask Him to cleanse you of your sins. He will welcome you with open arms.

Almighty God, who desires all people to come to Him,
I bow before You today.
Help me to know the truth about Jesus,
so I may be kept in safety on that day when Messiah Jesus
judges those who are not His.
