Tuscan Apple Tart

Tuscan Apple Tart

One of the best things I like about fall is the yummy foods containing apples and cinnamon. I learned about this recipe recently and decided to try it. I’ll share the recipe with you, in case you might like to try it also. It’s from Chef Jasper Mirabile, Jr., of Jasper’s Restaurant. Tuscan Apple Tart Ingredients 4 green apples  1 cup of flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup olive oil  3 eggs 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking…

Recalling Another Election

Recalling Another Election

The call went out in January 1980. “Come to pray in April in Washington D.C. for the election in November.” Thousands responded. We came in cars, trains, planes and busses–a million of us. We gathered on the Washington Mall for a day to humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face and a turning from our wicked ways. The day was heavily overcast and looked like it might rain at any moment. As the day progressed, sunlight poured through a single hole…

Fall Rituals

Fall Rituals

One of my fond memories as a child is raking leaves with my dad when we lived in town. Our house sat across from a lot filled with huge walnut trees. We’d rake those leaves into huge piles on the brick street and then light them on fire.  Those days are gone forever. The brick streets still remain but the house is gone, replaced by a retirement home. No one burns leaves any more, so that delicious aroma is missing…

Election Poem

Election Poem

Election season is upon us. If you’re like me, you’ll be glad when the election ads disappear. Just two weeks to go, thank God! Because people went to war, bled and died to give us the privilege, we need to exercise our right to vote.  It’s even worthy of a poem, so here it is: I’ve only one vote in this electionso I’ll carefully make my selection. But first, I’ll pray on voting dayto cast my ballot the right way….

A Visit to the Liberty Bell

A Visit to the Liberty Bell

It’s been 70 years since I saw the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA. When part of my family was in the area for a wedding recently, we put that on our bucket list as a Must See. I wanted the grandkids to see the signature of John Witherspoon on the Declaration of Independence, a near ancestor of their family line. The bell is no longer exposed to the elements in a Constitution Hall courtyard. It now has its own building…

Afterglow

Afterglow

After endless pictures, tears of joy, and festivities, there is always a day after a wedding. We stayed one day longer to go into the city of Philadelphia to view the Liberty Bell (more on that later) and trudge home to Downingtown, PA to eat leftovers in the frig. The bride and groom joined us as well as another newly-married couple of grandkids from VA. Our usual eleven around the dining table at the B & B swelled to fifteen….

The Family Tree Grows

The Family Tree Grows

One of the joys of being a grandparent is watching those wiggly little people bloom into adults. Soon we will add another graft into our family tree. Mike is his name. He’ll marry granddaughter, Kristen. Then we’ll have another person to call family. This wedding will be the third of our fourteen grandchildren. I’m glad I’m still around to participate in these fun events. I doubt I’ll live long enough to see them all married–the youngest is only nine.  ….

Fall Approaches

Fall Approaches

Season’s Turning September days wain,a hint of fall in the air.Time to turn off the air-conditionerand clear the patio of summer’s beauty. Soon, I’ll say goodbye to flourishing okra, green beans, and peppers—turn on grow lights in the basementand prepare for winter days. All the while, I’ll keep in mindSpring springs eternal. Do you have a favorite time of the year? Why is it? As you can tell, I dread winter, mostly because I don’t like to drive in ice and…

A Serendipitous Meeting

A Serendipitous Meeting

This past week our mailperson delivered the entire street’s mail one house off. I got my western neighbor’s mail and my eastern neighbor received mine.  When I finished canning my peach harvest for the year, I heard a knock at the door. I was delighted to see my neighbor to the east with my mail in her hand. I invited her in for a chat. They  moved in 2 1/2 years ago, just as Covid hit. They both work at…
