Strawberry Saga

Strawberry Saga

Below is a poem I wrote about my attempt to grow strawberries. Do you have a similar tale?

Strawberry Saga

Ordered strawberry plants last year.
Planted all thirty-six with care.
Three survived.
Covered them with straw before winter descended.
Thrilled when leaves poked through in early spring.
Blossoms emerged on old plants in abundance.
Planted additional sets for next year’s bounty.
Carefully surrounded them with chicken wire
to protect from rabbits.
Installed an electric fence to ward off squirrels.
Sprinkled ground with coyote urine to discourage all animals.
Added a chicken wire lid to dissuade hungry birds.
Waited for swelling berries to ripen.
Went to pick first crop.
Shooed away chipmunk who scurried
under chicken wire and dodged electric fence.
Discovered berries half-eaten by ants.

My newest book, The Road Home, an account of my husband’s lung cancer and God’s faithfulness to widows, is now available in paperback and eReader on Amazon.com. Hard Times in the Heartland and all my books are available here.
