Highflying Zip-line

Highflying Zip-line

Before taking off for our cruise, I followed the online instructions about what to do before leaving home. I carefully made out the list of activities which I intended to do while on board the Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.  Ride the wave-runner  Ice skate  Climb the rock-climbing wall  Ride the zip-line Aboard ship, the day finally came when we weren’t in a port and I made my way through the line to get into…

Candlelight Vigil for an Elk

Candlelight Vigil for an Elk

Is the world going nuts, or is it just me? On the news the other morning they reported that several hundred people gathered for a candlelight vigil on January 6, 2013 in Boulder, Colorado for an elk shot by an off-duty police officer. Reportedly the officer saw the elk limping and thought it was injured. The officer is now on leave. The people interviewed were crying over the loss of “Big Boy.” One tearful little girl who held a candle…

A Little Brother’s Message

A Little Brother’s Message

Recently, one of our older grandsons, Victor, age 22, came home to enjoy a going away dinner with his family of eight before he moved to Colorado. His next younger brother, Louis, 21,came to the dinner also. For some entertainment for the evening, Victor brought an old portable typewriter. I suspect he didn’t want to drag it to Colorado with him. The next morning, Victor’s family discovered a note written on the typewriter by the youngest child, Tony, who is…

Unreturnable

Unreturnable

That’s what the event coordinator said to me when I asked to schedule a book signing in an unnamed retail bookstore recently. I had held a book signing there in the past, but now they don’t handle self-published books because after the event, any leftover copies can’t be returned to the publisher. The word lingered in my head as I drove home. Then I began to chuckle. I’m so glad I’m unreturnable in Jesus’ eyes. Once I’ve accepted Him, He…

50 Years

50 Years

That’s a long time, even in human years. But not so long I can’t remember, so I will. We had just returned from our honeymoon the end of June 1962. I flipped on the radio as I unpacked our few boxes in an attempt to put together our new home. The radio announcer said, “The Supreme Court handed down their ruling today in the Engel v. Vitale case. Officially sponsored prayer will no longer be allowed in public schools.” The…

Jesus’ Proposal

Jesus’ Proposal

A holy hush fell on the residents at the retirement home as I took the tape out of the VCR machine last week. We had just finished a segment of Focus on the Family’s, That the World May Know series. Ray Vander Laan, the teacher, explained the significance of the cup served at the last supper. He shared that in Bible times when a prospective groom asked his bride to marry him, he offered her a cup of wine. If…

Does Jesus Have Feathers?

Does Jesus Have Feathers?

Did you ever wonder why the lady with the issue of blood touched the hem of Jesus’ garment in order to be healed? The answer lies in the word hem. In Greek, the New Testament language, hem is translated, kraspedon, in Matthew 9:20. This word means border, tassel, fringe. The corresponding word in Hebrew, the Old Testament language, is kanaph which is translated in Psalm 91:4 as wings, extremity. We translate this as corners, edge, skirt, wings, a border, hem…

A Common Dilemma

A Common Dilemma

Psalm 107:20 says, “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” God sends us His word, and for the most part, we tend to leave our Bibles on the shelf. Unread. Collecting dust. How can we obey His word if we don’t even know what He says? What His conditions are. How can we seek Him if we don’t know Him? How can we know Him if we don’t read His love letter to us?…

God’s Conditions

God’s Conditions

The Bible is full of God’s promises. Usually His promises are connected to a condition. “If you’ll do this, I’ll do this,” He says. Hebrews 11:6 says, “ . . . he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” So the conditions God sets are: 1. You have to come to Him, 2. you must offer Him your faith, no matter how small it is, 3. and…
