Old Self vs. New Self
Ephesians 4:22-23
. . . that in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
When we become new creatures in Christ, we still have a choice to sin. Satan drops tempting thoughts in our minds. When we entertain those thoughts, they become sin.
Old habits die hard. The old patterns of action and reaction, the old prejudices, the old paths need to be abandoned. Satan used those thought patterns in the past to cause us to sin. We no longer have to obey the old ways. We have a new Lord now.
We need to ask Jesus to help us lay aside the old way and renew our mind. We can’t think two thoughts at once. When Satan drops an old thought into our head, we need to choose to think on what is true, honorable, right, pure, and lovely. We need to speak well of another, according to Philippians 4:8.
When the old self is no longer fed, it dies from lack of nourishment.
Lord Jesus, help me to starve my old self
so my new self may flourish and grow strong,
my mind renewed,
and conformed to Your image.
