50 Years
That’s a long time, even in human years. But not so long I can’t remember, so I will.
We had just returned from our honeymoon the end of June 1962. I flipped on the radio as I unpacked our few boxes in an attempt to put together our new home.
The radio announcer said, “The Supreme Court handed down their ruling today in the Engel v. Vitale case. Officially sponsored prayer will no longer be allowed in public schools.”
The next year, 1963, in the Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, the Supreme Court’s decision prohibited official Bible-reading in American public schools. This decision was so unpopular that in 1964, the sponsor of that bill, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, was referred to as “the most hated woman in America” in Life magazine.
Years have passed, and various decisions have upheld these infamous rulings. Over those fifty years, the fabric of our society has unraveled. Drugs have become rampant, there is no respect for life, and God’s laws and ways have been trampled underfoot.
In the Bible in Leviticus 25, God calls every 50 years a year of Jubilee. In that year, all debts are cancelled, all property is returned to the original owner, and all those who sold themselves into slavery for debt payment are released from their debt.
If we will pray and ask forgiveness for turning to backs on God’s ways, perhaps the God who established this nation, will fulfill His promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 which reads, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
