The Valley of the Shadow
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
There is a deep gorge in Israel between Jerusalem and Jericho called the Valley of the Shadow of Death. The sun only shines there when it’s directly overhead. Shepherds even today, move their flocks through that valley when they guide their sheep to green pasture. When David, who wrote this Psalm, was a shepherd boy, he must have walked that same valley with his sheep.
Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He walks with us with His protection and support, consoling us in our dark times.
Through many years I often wondered why my father taught me to memorize this Psalm at age four. Today, the Lord showed me something.
Daddy fought in WWII in Germany. He didn’t return until after I was three. This psalm must have ministered greatly to him during that time. That’s why He was so anxious to make it a part of my life, even at four years old.
Thank You Lord Jesus for always being with us.
I rejoice that You are our Good Shepherd.
Thank You for Your constant consolation,
Your unending support, and Your sure victory.
