Basic Training
Today’s devotional is from a book I co-authored with Ardythe Kolb entitiled Daily Walk with Jesus available here in paperback and e-reader.
I John 2:17
And the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever.
Most often when we’re in a stew about something that’s going wrong, our problem is about time. We live in a minuscule slice of eternity, but it’s all we have, so we panic over life’s frightening issues.
God knows what we need in the eternal plan, and even thought He might want our lives to flow smoothly because He loves us, He understands it wouldn’t be best. He isn’t looking for what makes us feel good at the moment. He allows us to go through hard times to polish our rough edges for the long haul.
Lots of money and a cushy life won’t help anyone–not really. When we realize that everything we have actually belongs to the Lord, and we are merely stewards, our view of value expands. Except as it’s used to help others, riches aren’t worth much. As we give Him ourselves and commit to do His will, priorities change.
We’re created to live forever. Our life in the present age is basic training for forever.
Father, set my mind
on eternal time;
help me to choose my choices
with wisdom.
