Reunions

Reunions

This past week I have had two occasions to be with long-ago friends. About a fourth of our high school graduating class met in the Ozarks for a long weekend. We revisited memories from days past, colored and warped by over 53 years of life since our graduation. The second group was a gathering of Christian sisters who went to the same church over 40 years ago. We came together from all over the map to celebrate one member’s 90th…

True Riches

True Riches

My husband’s channel surfing finally landed on the History channel recently. The program listed the world’s resources; gold, oil, and water, among other things. At the end of each segment, they stated the dollar amount of each resource in today’s market. At the end of the hour, they estimated the world’s total riches in so many quadrillion dollars. I don’t know about you, but I can’t get my head around that much money. All I can understand is that’s one…

Truth vs. Lies

Truth vs. Lies

There is none so deaf as he who will not hear, none so blind, who will not see, none so lame as those who choose their own destiny headed for utter darkness, alone, for all eternity. In this day of increased knowledge, theories abound. People who embrace these ideas consider them new and enlightening. In essence, these are the old lies dressed up in new clothes. Satan has been at this deception since the beginning. He told Eve to go…

Dreams & Visions

Dreams & Visions

“‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams’” (Acts 2:17). Recently an older gentleman in my Bible study approached me after our weekly session. The lesson on the CD that week dealt with interceding for revival. “Chaplain, I had a dream last night. In the…

Another Step Down the Slippery Slope

Another Step Down the Slippery Slope

Fifty-one years ago the Supreme Court handed down the ruling banning directed prayer in public schools. Today our schools are a miserable failure. Forty years ago the Supreme Court made abortion on demand the law of the land. To date, 156 million babies never had the privilege of seeing the light of day. On June 26, 2013, that same court took another step down the slippery slope by giving the nod for same sex couples to enjoy the same benefits…

Candlelight Vigil for an Elk

Candlelight Vigil for an Elk

Is the world going nuts, or is it just me? On the news the other morning they reported that several hundred people gathered for a candlelight vigil on January 6, 2013 in Boulder, Colorado for an elk shot by an off-duty police officer. Reportedly the officer saw the elk limping and thought it was injured. The officer is now on leave. The people interviewed were crying over the loss of “Big Boy.” One tearful little girl who held a candle…

End-time Preparations

End-time Preparations

When someone speaks about end-time preparation, all ears perk up. We give so much time and effort to physical preparations of food, water, and shelter. We must not neglect spiritual preparations. We need to know Jesus as our Strong Tower. Scripture tells us, “The name of Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10). This word picture came alive to me when I visited Ireland. In the 8th and 9th century, the monks…

Forewarned is Forearmed

Forewarned is Forearmed

In Matthew 24 Jesus instructs His disciples to recognize the sign of His coming and the end of the age. Jesus listed the early birth pangs: False Christs that mislead many. Wars and rumors of wars. Nations, (which in the original language is “ethnos” which means a race, a nation), and kingdoms against kingdom. Then comes:  Tribulation of persecution, killing, and hatred of all nations because we are called by His name. This is a time of…
