Pride and Its Consequences

Pride and Its Consequences

cdn-media_nationaljournal_comThis week as I listened for the Lord’s direction for the blog I heard the word pride. That attitude is the opposite of humility. Last week I mentioned II Chronicles 7:14 which instructs us to humble ourselves before God in order for Him to heal us.

I checked out the 55 times the word pride appears in the New American Standard Bible to see what God had to say about pride.

There is the pride of power which brings God’s judgment (Leviticus 26:19).

Then in II Chronicles 17:6 He speaks about taking pride in His ways. In other words, stopping to marvel at Him and His way of working in the lives of every-day people. This same scripture talks about removing false gods. A false god would be anyone or anything we look to for our needs, other than the One True God. He is the God who sees, hears, and acts on behalf of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

We are told in II Chronicles 32:26 that King Hezekiah, as well as the inhabitants of Jerusalem, humbled the pride of their heart, so they avoided the wrath of the Lord. God’s wrath didn’t fall on them as long as Hezekiah ruled.

Psalm 10:2 states that in pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted. The psalmist asks the Lord to let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. Later in Psalm 31:18 the psalmist asks the Lord to let the lying lips be mute which speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.

This week we have seen the truth come out in the Benghazi attack of last September 11, revelations of wire-tapping of Associated Press reporters, and the special scrutiny by the IRS of Tea Party contributors and those who supported the Billy Graham Ministries.

I wonder if our Almighty God is undertaking for us who cry out to Him for protection against those who lift themselves in pride and arrogance. What do you think?

  1. Hi Sally, thank you for sharing about fleshy pride, you researched it well and yes it is a danger we can all be guilty of if we don’t put our flesh to death by The Spirit. What we need to have is Godly Pride (see below) worldly or fleshy pride gives Satan a foothold in our lives.

    What Worldly pride is…

Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

1 John 2:15- 17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the Pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

    What Godly Pride is …

Galatians 6: 4 Each one should understand their own actions. Then they can take Pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to others.

2 Corinthians 8:24 show these men the proof of your Love and the reason for our Pride in you, so that the Churches can see it.

2 Corinthians 5:11-12 Because we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. It is plain to God what we are, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. We are giving you an opportunity to take Pride in us not trying to commend ourselves again to you , so that you have an answer for those who take Pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.

Romans 11:13b I take Pride in my Ministry.

As a Christian I also take Godly Pride in my Ministry to those who are in darkness, and rejoice with those who are not, as I’m sure you do too Sally.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne
