Talk-show Host Foundation

imagesCARD0E0LThe day after the first installment of History Channel’s new series The Bible, I read Bill O’Reilly’s discussion with the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas. Bill stated that “some of the Bible is allegory, like Jonah and the whale.” (The Bible doesn’t call it a whale, only a big fish). Bill went on to label other accounts as allegory.

The pastor replied that since Jesus referred to Jonah and the big fish as fact it must not be allegory.

I wrote Bill this reply, since he often asks for feedback:

“Bill, Hebrews 11:6 says, ‘And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.’ To say the Bible contains allegorical stories is like walking into quicksand. When terrible times come, you don’t have any solid ground to stand on. Romans 10:11 says, ‘Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed’ (KJV).
Either you believe the truth of the Bible or you don’t. There is no in between. Ask God to show you His truth while you still have time.”

I’ve never received an answer. I don’t know if he even saw the message. That part is up to the Lord. All the Lord asked me to do is deliver it and I did. How is your foundation?

  1. Good point to make! I hope O’Reilly does see it and responds. I will look for a response from you to him (if he gives you one) in a future blog. I know many people who believe parts of the Bible are allegory, parts fiction, and parts literal Truth. I’ve been to Christian lectures at writer’s conferences with this theme. But these people also say the Bible as literature is just as powerful for doing God’s work as the literal Truth. Many stories are told with the concept “Creative Non-Fiction” and they hold powerful Truths.
